"I was beaten up with a tennis racquet and sticks, kicked, punched, and physically abused by several people at the same time ...The teachers and the school nurse all knew about it but they never did anything to stop it. I never pressed charges against the school." (Woman from Sweden) ...being insulted by a doctor? "When the dermatologist found out that I was a homosexual, he
told me to go to see a vet." (Man from Poland)....being refused entry to a restaurant or a hotel? "My girlfriend and I were having a quiet romantic dinner in a restaurant talking about what happened at work during the week, when the owner warned us not to hold hands or we would have to leave." (Woman in Portugal) ...being denied pensions and social benefits? "I took an unpaid leave from my job to care for my partner who was permanently unfit for work due to a terminal illness. Had I been a woman, we would have been granted an invalidity pension and a dependent allowance.... but it was originally refused to us." (Man from lreland) - Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people across Europe still experience these kinds of discrimination in their daily lives. And yet there is no guaranteed equal protection against these and other forms of discrimination at the European level.
