Tekst: United for freedom. The protection and extension of individual freedom depends on collective action. The co-operation between the 21 states which make up the Council of Europe is a good example of this. Citizens' rights can only be defended by united efforts to overcome the evils which threaten to underminde them: terrorism, violence, intolerance, xenophobia, drug-taking, misuse of computerised personal information … Throughout democratic Europe human dignity is now protected by international agreements which guarantee human rights, social justice and equal treatment for men and women. Europe is at the service of each and every citizen. European unity defends the freedom of all.
