Description
Summary:Zwart-witfoto van arbeiders aan het werk in een katoenfabriek in Mehalla al Kobra (Egypte), 17 jumi 1949. De textielfabriek werkt volgens westerse technieken. Opschrift achteraan: " Yankee style industrial miracle. Mehalla al Kobra, Egypt: on the fabulous Nile river, an industrial miracle is taking place. Egypt has built, and is constantly expanding one of the world's largest cotton mills into a workman's paradise. The Yankee style community with the last word in recreational, industrial, educational and living facilities was built at a cost of $ 60.000.000, and covers more than 150 acres. To bring about this Sahara Mirage, as European industrialists call it, Egypt sent a mission of over 50 technicians to the United States to study Yankee know-how. Over 5.000 looms provide work for 1500 men in this division of the mill. Three eight-hour shifts turn out one hundred million yards of Egypt's famous long staple cotton products annually. All of it is consumed by some 22.000.000 Egyptians."
